Dear Friends of Uptown!,
They’ve called West Chester “the perfect town,” but I don’t agree. I think West Chester is missing two things: a waterfront and a theater. Now we probably can’t do anything about a waterfront, but we—you and me—WE CAN BUILD A THEATRE!
As a first step, a small group got together and formed the Uptown! Entertainment Alliance. Hundreds have since joined us who agree with our goals:
- To support West Chester’s existing arts organizations by creating a permanent venue in the heart of West Chester’s Historic District, sharing it with Chester County Arts organizations
- To engage underserved age groups in West Chester with an entertainment program of Children’s Theater, “Broadway in the Borough,” traveling theater, cultural performances, film, and so much more.
In the spring of 2012, almost 300 film and entertainment enthusiasts attended our sold-out Red Carpet Gala Premiere. In summer, the live theater performances of the Ocean City Theater Company and the West Chester Studio for the Performing Arts captivated hundreds of children and their families. In fall, we offered two free Jazz concerts on the historic Courthouse steps. And, as winter gathered, so did a house-packing audience for our production of Scrooge’s Christmas, followed by candlelight caroling through the streets of West Chester.
We have even bigger plans for 2013, including a Songwriting Contest, film, hip-hop dance, and a variety of great local and regional musical performances at venues throughout the Borough. We will continue to entertain, but our top goal remains creating a permanent theater to enhance the excitement, charm, and prosperity of our community.
We have made a lot of progress. We continue to work on creating our own permanent venue.
However, only through our dedicated volunteers and financial support from generous people such as you can we continue to make our programs free or affordable. And, obviously, we need major funds to secure a new home for entertainment in West Chester.
